The Generals Hub: Team Event at Wargen Wargames!

Last week, on September 6th, the whole team from The Generals Hub headed to the Wargen Wargames tournament, a 3-player team tournament where each of us brought our own army:

  • Adri Manzano with Raiderz Madriz

  • Carlos Jimeno with Guarida Team

They’ll tell you about their own experience at the tournament. I played second fiddle in two of the games, and in the third, Sergio faced off against our biggest fan, the great Cipri!

Ekkius – Ogor Mawtribes vs Ironjawz

In the first round it was me against Adri (founder and member of TGH), so let’s get into it.

The map we played was Avalanche of Ash, which, with its neutral territory zones, was perfect for pulling off one of my tactics. However, the last game I had against Adri and his fearsome Ironjawz left me scared of this army, his Kragnos, and their infamous 20-inch charges. This time there was no Kragnos, but the two units of 10 Brutes were still pretty scary.

The idea was to bring Redd and the tyrant along with one or two units of Gluttons to get the Ward 6+ and ignore the first damage of each phase from the tyrant’s artefact, which would really annoy the opponent if they’re running the Blazing Onslaught tactic. On the other side, we’ve got a support unit of 5 more Gluttons and, in the other regiment, a Bloodpelt Hunter and a unit of hunters that we’ll keep in reserve to drop in later, wherever suits us best. I also took the chance to test out the Frost Sabres. They’re cheap in an army full of expensive units, and as long as they’re within 3 inches of a terrain feature, they’re invisible beyond 9 inches — perfect for screening or completing the Siege of Ashes tactic.

Knowing what Adri could do with his Ironjawz, my plan was to try to hold a strong front line and gradually whittle down units with the help of the hunters. The longer it took us to clash, the more units could get the eating battletrait thanks to Redd’s 1CP ability. Here’s the deployment.

I gave Adri turn 1, and he moved his units around, repositioning and waiting for my hungry ogors to throw themselves forward. He completed his first Ashes tactic with two units in the bottom half of the board, and I did the same with my Frost Sabres on my turn, where I also moved the rest of my army forward, casting both the Pendulum and the Cogs to help with the charge in later turns.

In the next round I was the underdog, so I claimed the objective in the bottom-left corner of the map.

Adri repositioned the Brutes, tucking them into obscuring to form a pretty terrifying blob. Up top he tried to push toward the objective and split my forces. Down below, the Gruntas charged my pups, wiping out one whole unit and leaving the other down to 1 model on 1 wound.

On my turn, Adri tied up my Glutton unit with the Mighty. I brought down hunters and the Bloodpelt Hunter to shoot at his screen of 6 Wreckaz, killing 4 of them. Down below, 5 Ogors charged the Gruntas, and between the bull’s charge, the fight, and the end-of-turn mortal wounds, I managed to complete the Blazing Onslaught tactic.

Once again on Adri’s turn, and after claiming one of the objectives, he pushed forward with both units of Wreckaz and 10 Brutes carrying some pretty nasty buffs. I’d given my top Ogor unit run-and-charge after eating in combat the turn before, and a 5-inch redeploy plus a counter-charge helped them get into combat. Unfortunately, Adri — a sly old dog — had it all figured out: instead of focusing my unit with -1 rend and +1 save, the Brutes lived up to their reputation and attacked the unit that had just charged them, wiping it out completely. My Ogors kept whittling the Brutes down bit by bit, and the tyrant didn’t land a single attack the whole game, which made the comeback an uphill battle.

In my turn, the last of the orc fighters finally died, and after a redeploy from the other Brute unit, my hunters were left with no target to shoot at.

With time running out on us, we had to work out round four on paper. Adri couldn’t complete his first Blazing tactic and ended up scoring more from objectives than me in round 4, since he had table control. On my turn I could only scratch together three measly points, since I couldn’t score either the second Blazing or Siege tactic.

It was a really interesting, close game, with Adri winning 45 to 39.

Carlos Jimeno – Maggotkin of Nurgle vs Ironjawz

In round two, I faced Adri’s Ironjawz with my Nurgle army on Seize the Embers. We both had four drops. Adri won deployment priority and chose to go first to secure the decision on who’d take turn one, which he ended up handing over to me. That let me react to his deployments: I planted the bulk of my army in the centre, placed the Plaguebearers opposite his Brutes on the left flank, and held the Glottkin and the Sloven Knights back for the right flank.

The plan on the left was simple and very Nurgle: the Plaguebearers didn’t need to kill anyone, just sit there, be a nuisance, and turn the area into total gridlock. They did exactly that and kept the Brutes tied up for a good chunk of the game.

In turn one I tried to complete the first Siege of Ashes tactic by running the Glottkin and the knights out of my territory. The problem was the Glottkin was nine inches from the edge: it moves six and needed to roll at least a three to run. I rolled a two, because good plans always deserve to die in the stupidest way possible. Still, I got the ten primary points for the turn.

From there, the game came down to table control. The Plaguebearers locked down the left, the Rotswords and the rest of the army held the centre, and the Glottkin stayed back defending the right flank. Adri did well repeatedly sending his Weirdbrute Wreckaz against the mighty one, at one point seriously threatening him with a unit of Brute Ragerz loaded with every buff going. The Glottkin saved exceptionally well and managed to hold on, but with slightly worse rolls it could easily have gone down in a single activation.

Controlling the centre also let me recover the tactic I’d failed on turn one. In later turns I sent the Lord of Plagues and Belga, my two small heroes, out that way, and finally completed the first Siege of Ashes tactic. Nowhere near as flashy as sending the Glottkin sprinting down a flank, but a lot more effective.

From that same position I also managed to complete Blazing Onslaught, whose first tactic is about dealing damage in three different phases. Between Rotigus’s spells, Belga’s prayers, combat, and Nurgle’s diseases, it’s a tactic that tends to come pretty naturally once the army’s in the thick of it.

On the last turn, Adri tried to complete his first Siege of Ashes tactic with two of his heroes. The Glottkin pulled off a counter-charge and killed one of them, stopping him from scoring it. It wasn’t a play that decided the game, but it did widen the gap on the scoreboard. Adri couldn’t complete his secondaries, and on top of that, objective control meant he was usually scoring four fewer primary points than me each round.

The final result was 49-25 for Nurgle. Even so, there were a few decisions I could’ve made better. The Sloven Knights spent almost the whole game carrying the emberstone nugget around and only generated three points. In hindsight, they probably would’ve contributed more sticking with the Glottkin and applying strike-last to anything that charged him. The nugget did score points, sure, but turning a 180-point unit into Deliveroo riders probably wasn’t the best deal of the tournament.

Sergio Leal – Stormcast Eternals vs Blades of Khorne

We don’t have any photos to illustrate this game, but the opponent was Cipri, part of the Wargen Wargames staff, and on Sunday he was playing for team Veni, Vidi, Perdinchi… absolute legends!

Here’s Sergio’s summary.

Not my best tournament: a disastrous first game against Flesheaters, bad rolls, bad game plan. Second game against our teammate Ekkius — the fog scenario with huge terrain; it looked like a Lazio vs Roma derby, total catenaccio, until in the last few turns the game finally opened up against our ogre teammate. After two bad games I went into the third one full of doubt, but there was Cipri to cheer me up.

A 10-out-of-10 player, and a 100-out-of-10 person, he set up right in front of me with his 5 soul devourers, advancing with such bad luck that my Vanguard-Raptors were right there waiting — they’d been having a day to forget, missing so much they looked like stormtroopers with everything they’d whiffed in the previous games.

Since I had more drops, I let him go first. I kept my Vanguard-Raptors deployed at just the right range to shoot him on his turn and then again on mine. A devourer and a half went down each turn; I easily completed the Siege of Ashes tactic with my Terminus and the Reclusian.

Next turn, I had 3 devourers really close, so I decided to go first myself. Two more devourers went down, and the third on his turn, right after he charged my Reclusian. Honorable mention this turn to my 6 Judicators, who racked up a ridiculous 3 wounds from shooting and combat on a devourer that hadn’t popped any CP or anything — and then blew it up completely on the comeback.

After that the game was pretty much decided. The Vanguard-Raptors got their revenge on the evil devourer that had killed my poor Judicators; their revenge was so thorough they didn’t even let Iridan charge, dropping him with a single round of shooting.

Wrapping up the last Siege tactics, I finished the game without completing the rest, because the wicked Vanguard-Raptors decided to kill everything they hadn’t already killed in previous games, denying myself the Blazing Onslaught tactics by not being able to deal damage across 3 phases.

That’s it for my tournament and my brief stint in the competitive scene — now back to my real hobby: shopping… the giants are coming!
